AhlulBayt News Agency - Muqtada Sadr made a surprise visit to Tehran on Monday.
Muqtada al-Sadr's visit to the Iranian capital was both surprising and significant, and comes just a day after hundreds of his supporters stormed through Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in an unprecedented security breach.
"Sadr boarded an Iranian Airlines plane today for an unexpected visit to Tehran," said a source in the National Iraqi Alliance political group.
No further details were released over the agenda of his visit.
Iraq has been the scene of political turmoil over the past few weeks over Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s efforts to form a new cabinet.
On Saturday, protesters stormed the parliament building in Baghdad’s Green Zone, demanding that lawmakers approve the proposed technocrat government.
The protesters also called for the resignation of the Iraqi president, prime minster and parliament speaker.
